Barking up the Right Tree

The Wednesday Felters

From Friday 8th December 2017 through February 2018
Please note the gallery will be closed for Christmas and holidays during January.

Who are we?

The Wednesday Felters meet twice per month to share knowledge and skills in the wet felt-making process for the sheer joy of creating.  The group meets at the Hand Spinners and Weavers Association in Thebarton.

The members ranges from experienced felt-makers to complete beginners.   Sometimes a project idea is shared, developed from a demonstration by one of the experienced members.  On this occasion they took up a challenge to create a piece of feltwork from a photograph.  Group leader, Jenny Gunson creates wonderful mixed-media work from close-up photographs of the natural environment she finds around her property in the Fleurieu Peninsula.  She offered a choice of three photographs and a standard size canvas for this challenge.  The resulting work will be exhibited from early December until February.

A successful challenge!

Sixteen artworks in this series and more!

Members of the group interpreted the photographs quite differently, all using a basis of merino wool fibre.  A variety of techniques such as nuno felting and inclusions have been used in some work and mixed media presentation using natural materials and the original photograph in others..

Turn the photograph and bark becomes a landscape.

The palate ranges from soft greens and greys to vivid autumnal jewels.  Rich textures are created both within the layers of felt and through embellishment using beads, ribbon as well as bark and other collected materials.

This exhibition includes a range of additional work by members of the group including scarves and jewellery - perhaps a Christmas gift?  Also a range of interesting cards by Hellen and friends.
