Journeys Through Colour
Handspinners and Weavers Guild - The Felt Collective

Saturday 5th February  until Sunday 29th February 2022

The Felt Collective meets twice per month to share knowledge and skills in the wet felt-making process for the sheer joy of creating.

The group meets at the Hand Spinners and Weavers Guild SA.
The Guild Hall and Little Glory Gallery are located at
196 South Road,  Mile End,  South Australia.
(A parking area at the rear of the complex is accessed from Lurline Street.)

The members ranges from experienced felt-makers to complete beginners.   Sometimes a project idea is shared, developed from a demonstration by one of the experienced members.

Journeys Through Colour

The world is full of colour. The skies give us captivating gifts of beauty in the setting sun, refracted light that creates rainbows, and the fleeting beauty of the aurora australis. The flora and fauna of the natural environment — from bush to shore and beneath the seas — are alive with colour. Beautiful flowers, exotic birds, shimmering insects, vivid fish and flamboyant sea creatures are colourful for a reason: for attraction, warning, and camouflage. Colour is in our genes, too, in terms of hair colour, skin tones and eye colour, which are part of our identity and attraction.
Culturally, we use colour in all aspect of our lives from the signalling colours of traffic lights to the beautification of our homes and bodies.  We attach symbolic meaning to the colours of clothing that portray social standing and heritage; for ceremonial purposes we use specific colours to represent virginity, marriage status and mourning, while the vestments of clergy and royalty are determined by tradition. We talk of ‘seeing red’, ‘feeling blue’, or being ‘green with envy’. In environmental terms, we think of eco-friendly initiatives as ‘clean and green’ while in the financial world, off-the-record earnings are part of the ‘the black economy’. Significant sites and buildings or places of particular beauty are often defined by colour: the Red Centre of Australia, the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, the Golden Temple of Amritsar, and the whitewashed buildings and azure seas of the Greek Islands.
For each of us, colours evoke cultural concepts, emotional responses and memories, and enable us to communicate visually. In this exhibition, members of The Felt Collective share their personal explorations and creative journeys through colour.

Linhay Gallery has a COVID-safe plan, so numbers are limited and visitors are required to use hand sanitizer  on entry to the gallery and wear a face mask  as well as keeping appropriate space between each other.
